Make it Happen!

This afternoon the Liberal Democrats discussed their vision and values paper - Make it Happen! Northgate Liberal Democrat Councillor Linda Seekings said "Real change is needed in Britain to address the many problems facing ordinary people and families. The Make it Happen paper shows how the Liberal Democrats will do that."

The paper, which was agreed by conference, states that the core purpose of a Liberal Democrat government will be to create a fair society, where everyone gets real opportunities and chances in life, through taking power from Westminster and special interests and giving it to people and communities.

It goes on to say that Labour and the Conservatives are so used to being in power every few years, they don't listen to people any more and only the Liberal Democrats have the vision and substance to provide real solutions and make change happen. Labour can't. The Conservatives won't.

Conference resolved that the Liberal Democrat policy priorities must be:

1. Delivering big tax cuts for those who are struggling, an end to the unfair Council Tax, and extra investment in the poorest children from their first day at pre-school right through to university.

2. Investing in clean energy instead of nuclear and getting people out of their cars and into quality public transport.

3. Introducing fairer elections in which every vote really counts, and ending the influence of big money in politics.

4. Standing up for British freedoms, with a Freedom Law to get the government off people's backs, and new privacy protections for our personal data.
