War! - What is it good for?

9.35.19pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sat 17th Feb 2007

George W. Bush and Tony Blair

A version of the classic anti-war song 'WAR - What is it good for?' is about to be released by Tony Blair's "re-formed" university band Ugly Rumours. The producers of the record say "We need your help to embarrass Tony Blair. If Blair is in the charts, the media will have to report the success of "his" anti-war hit. To have a top 20 hit in the UK you need only approximately 5000 sales. The track costs £1.50 and we will donate all profits to Stop the War Coalition."

Northgate Councillor, Gordon Seekings, an anti-war supporter for most of his adult life said "This redoing of the old hit record is a brilliant piece of showmanship and a really imaginative and original way to draw attention to this government's continued commitment to the war in Iraq. The producers, so I have been told, aim to have the track in the top 20 for March 19th - the anniversary of the invasion. That way Tony Blair will not be able to avoid media coverage of this element of his 'legacy'."

Gordon went on to say "I opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and was one of those who took part in the million people march against the war. That war was illegal then and it's now an illegal occupation. It was done in defiance of the United Nations and has left over 130 British service men and women and more than 3000 US troops dead. It has also resulted in tens of thousands of Iraq civilians dead as well as countless numbers of aid workers from the UK and elsewhere."
