Bird Flu

Commenting on the measures announced by Scotland's Environment and Rural Development Minister, Ross Finnie MSP, Liberal Democrat shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs secretary, Chris Huhne MP, said "The arrival of avian flu was only a matter of time given its spread westwards across Europe, and it is right that it should trigger precautions but not panic."

Chris went on to say "Ross Finnie has announced a sensible set of proposals to deal with the matter and protect poultry from infection by wild birds, and we should continue to monitor the situation closely on both sides of the border".

Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Menzies Campbell MP has reiterated the need for a measured response to the presence of the H5N1 strain of avian flu in a dead swan found in his Fife constituency. Sir Menzies said "People should be alert but not alarmed. The Government have had a long time to prepare for this moment. Having spoken to Minister Bradshaw, it would appear the Government has the situation in hand. The confirmation of a swan having been infected with the H5N1 strain is a timely reminder. I encourage people to heed DEFRA's advice on the identification of potential cases of avian flu."
