Liberal Democrats launch new web site in fight to safeguard Civil Liberties1.27.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 24th Oct 2005
The Liberal Democrats today launched a new anti-ID Card web site as their latest weapon in the fight against the introduction of compulsory Identity Cards - www.libdems.org.uk/noidcards Crawley Councillor Gordon Seekings said, "We are in danger of losing our civil liberties through the action of the Labour party and the inaction of the Conservatives. This website is just one aspect of the fight to protect civil liberties. Commenting on the new site Liberal Democrat Chief Executive Chris Rennard said "This is an important step-up in our campaign against Labour's expensive and unpopular plan." "Given how much opposition there is to these plans in the community, it is vital that we make full use of new media as an important extension to our traditional campaigning." The Bill cleared the House of Commons last week, but the government's majority was slashed to a mere 25 votes. The new site aims to increase public awareness of the implications of such a measure, which could severely compromise Civil Liberties. The site also aims to put pressure on the House of Lords, who have yet to ratify the Bill. To view the new site visit www.libdems.org.uk/noidcards
