Lib Dems stunning win

3.05.25am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 15th Jul 2005

Crawley Liberal Democrats are congratulating their colleagues in Cheadle today on winning the bye-election caused by the sad death of Liberal Democrats MP Patsy Calton.

Patsy was originally elected in 2001 by the small margin of 33 votes over the sitting Conservative MP. This made it the most marginal seat in the Country and as a result it became the number one target for the Conservatives at the 2005 General Election.

However the 2005 General Election resulted in a massive swing to the Liberal Democrats and a further rejection of the former Conservative MP. Patsy though was sadly too ill to attend the election count, and she finally lost her brave fight against cancer only a few days after taking the oath of allegiance when Parliament reconvened.

Further details on the bye-election can be found on the Cheadle Lib Dems website at www.cheadle-libdems.org.uk
