Northgate - set to be Crawley's biggest building site?

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 1st Nov 2004

In a message to Northgate residents local Councillors Gordon & Linda Seekings said "With the Borough Council suggesting a massive redevelopment of the north of the Town Centre, Northgate is probably destined to change forever."

This proposed development is totally within Northgate and encompasses the area bounded by The Boulevard (up to and including the Post Office), Kilnmead (including the TA Centre/Parking area and the County Buildings), and Woodfield Road. It includes Exchange Road and most of Northgate Road.

With the exception of the Telephone Exchange, the Dyers Almshouse and the houses in Kilnmead the suggestion is that everything else would be demolished. What would replace it is a mixed retail and housing development - with of course some form of "Town Hall" presence in that area. The Boulevard would also be closed to traffic.

Cllrs Gordon & Linda Seekings both say they are committed to voting against this scheme unless the plans enhance the area and protect the Dyers Almshouses from being overlooked; and the scheme has a workable alternative to Kilnmead's traffic problems.
