Council Tax - The more it goes up, the unfairer it becomes

6.52.38pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 13th Apr 2004

With another inflation busting Council Tax increase in Crawley it simply reconfirms that the present system is unfair and flawed and the tax should be axed.

The new council tax levels, which took effect from April 1st are the combined costs from Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Sussex Police authority. The increases are:

• 5.9% higher for Tory run West Sussex County Council.

• 5.5% higher for Labour run Crawley Borough Council

• 7.6% higher from Sussex Police

In comparison the state pension went up by only 2.8% on April 12th.

It's also been revealed in the Treasury's Budget papers that the government expect council tax to increase by 7.4% in 2005/6.
