Clegg and Cable set out response to economic crisis
Mon 6th Oct 2008
Below is the text of an article by Vince Cable which appeared in the Sunday Times yesterday. In it he argues that, while, central bank independence must be maintained, the Chancellor should write to the governor saying that on a temporary emergency basis the committee should assume a central role in countering the economic crisis which would allow for a large cut in interest rates. Vince also puts the case for a more systematic approach to managing the banking crisis, with the government helping banks to raise fresh capital from the markets by acting as underwriter on rights issues.
